The Tesla Robotaxi is getting ready to launch its new service in Austin, Texas. These driverless taxis are expected to hit the roads next month as part of a national rollout.
But here is the big question: what happens if one of these cars causes a crash?
A robotaxi is a fully autonomous vehicle. That means it drives itself. No steering wheel, no brake pedals, and no human behind the wheel.
Tesla says the cars will use cameras, radar, and other sensors to stay safe. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has questions. Regulators want to know how these robotaxis will handle poor visibility, like fog, heavy rain, or sun glare.
That is not all! NHTSA also asked how Tesla will monitor the cars, what models will be used, and how Tesla will decide whether a vehicle is driving safely.
If a regular driver causes a crash, you know who is at fault. But what if there is no driver?
In a robotaxi crash, the blame could fall on several parties. That might include Tesla, the company that made the sensors, or the engineers who built the software.
Accidents involving autonomous vehicles raise tough questions. Those questions do not have simple answers.
This is not the first time Texas has seen driverless vehicles.
Earlier this year, Aurora Innovation launched fully autonomous 18-wheelers on the roads between Dallas and Houston. These trucks are already operating without human drivers.
We wrote about that launch in our driverless truck accident blog post. Check it out, to learn how the law applies to commercial autonomous vehicles.
The Tesla Robotaxis might be smaller than 18-wheelers, but the legal issues are just as serious.
If you or someone you love is hurt in an accident involving a robotaxi, do not try to figure it out alone.
