After a wreck, it can be tempting to stop treatment because of work, bills, and busy schedules. This post covers what can happen if treatment ends too early, including the regret of wondering whether more therapy would have made a difference and the arguments a defense attorney may raise.
You’re in a wreck, you’re hurt, you go see the doctor, and they recommend therapy in one form or another. Maybe physical therapy, maybe the chiropractor, maybe some sort of injections, maybe surgery followed up by a long course of physical therapy. And for some reason, you decide you’re going to stop getting treatment.
Why? People are busy. They’ve got work. They’ve got bills to pay and they can’t keep going to treatment. Maybe it’s difficult to leave work in the middle of the day or even after work. But it is strongly recommended that you see it through the course. Go with your therapy as long as the doctors and healthcare providers say you need to, for a couple of reasons.
One, you don’t want to look back in time and still have problems, thinking, “I wish I’d have just gone for that extra month. That might have been the difference.” Regret is a heck of a feeling that none of us want to live with. So get the therapy, continue doing it, and complete it if for no other reason than your own peace of mind, knowing you did everything to get yourself better.
The other thing is for your case. If somebody else caused your injury and you’re getting your treatment and you stop, the defense attorney is going to bring it up. They’re going to bring up the fact that you didn’t listen to your doctor. They’re going to bring up the fact that you missed treatment. So don’t give them that arrow. Don’t give them that argument to use against you.
